Make A Change Monday - Saying Goodbye

The movers are here.

Don and I are moving to Kansas (Fort Leavenworth) this week. We've known it for months, been planning the logistics of it for weeks, but now it is actually REAL and I'm having mixed emotions. I have not kept it a secret that Fayetteville is not my favorite town in the world. I am ready for a new adventure, ready to try another part of the country, ready to have my husband home and on a RIDICULOUSLY easy school schedule for a year. I was ready to leave this place and never look back. But then I started having to say goodbye.

Don and I have said goodbye over 100 times in the past two weeks. 100 little heartbreaks. 100 times we've wondered if we'll ever see that smile or feel this hug again. 100 brave faces while we act like we are used to this. 100 "thank God for Facebook" jokes. From Don's incredibly supportive boss and coworkers to other Army families we've known for over 10 years (best thing about moving? the chance to be reunited with old friends at every post!). From new babies we've loved since before they were born to children we've watched grow up right in front of our eyes. From old friends who have seen us at our best and our worst to new friends who have become like family, to my actual family who we have been blessed to live close to for the first time since I moved away from home 20 years ago.

These are some of the memories we've made here.

So while I'm not sad to be leaving Fayetteville, I am sad to have to say goodbye. My heart is a little emptier today, my spirit a little lonelier. We have an incredibly rich life and I wouldn't change it for the world - but sometimes I wish it hurt just a little less.

  1. It has been a long time since I have had to say goodbye in a move and understand the excitement of going but the sadness of leaving! The Tar Heel state will be a little less fun with you gone!

I am going to miss you terribly but i cannot wait to get together again. Love you all so very much. My heart is heavy but full of well wishes for you.

  4. I was active duty military for 16 years. I cannot count the number of times I have had to say goodbye. It makes me heartsick. HOWEVER - if you would like some immediate new friends who are fish out of water at Leavenworth (they are AF), I can set you up with a contact. He is a major and she is the momma of a little girl that is about 3 or 4 months old. They have a great sense of humor and recently moved there from Japan. Contact me if you'd like ! <3 <3 <3

  5. Well, since we missed you in Fayetteville ... we will have to take a rain check for Ft. Leavenworth. It's kinda on the way to Mom's from VA. If you take a wrong turn at Kansas City ...

Have a great time! Hope to see you someday! (I make lots of wrong turns)

  7. :o(. Makes me cry too!! I wish you didn't have to go. But, like others have said, I can't wait to get back together again. It's just a year & because I'm old, it will be over in about a week!! See you soon ... Lots of hugs ... Penny

  8. Ironic, isn't it? The desire and readiness to move to a new "place," but the heartache it creates to say goodbye to good friends. But it really is the people who can make a miserable place bearable (and make paradise seem like...well, less than paradise). Thanks for being such an amazing person and good luck with that move!!!

Best of luck with your move...and oh I so understand your love of your wonderful craft room, really sweet and fun! You will start fresh with a new one and have a blast pulling out your toys, uh tools, no I mean toys!
